Now that you have your supplies your ready to start.
1. With a pencil draw your shape on the dull side of the freezer paper. Cut the shape on the traced line. Place the freezer paper shiny side down and iron to the wrong side of your selected fabric. If using more than one freezer paper template on your fabric, place them at least 1" apart. Cut around the shape adding a scant 1/2" seam. With your paper scissors clip any deep inside points and make a few clips around the outside curve. The clips are used to help you ease your fabric onto the freezer paper. Practice will help you know where to clip.
2. Put a little glue around the edges of the shape, getting glue onto both the outer edge and the seam allowance. It works best if you put the glue on a small section at a time. Next, using your finger or a pointed object, such as a seam riper or stilleto, turn from seam allowance over onto the freezer paper.
3. Using a long thin needle and matching your thread, stitch your applique shape onto your background fabric using a "blind stitch". You want your stitches to disappear into the fabric.
4. With a spray bottle, squirt a lttle water onto both the front and back of your applique piece. Let it set for about 10 minutes, then cut a small slit in the back on your background fabric. Be careful you don't cut your applique. Now reach in and pull out your freezer paper. If your shape is large, you might need to take a larger slit or more than one slit. Allow the slit to dry and press to close.
Another method of freezer paper applique is to baste, rather than glue your seam allowances. After you have basted your seam allowance you need to press the seams with a steam iron using a little spray starch. After you have pressed the edges carefully remove the freezer paper, lifting only a few edges at a time, until you can remove the freezer paper easily. Tuck in any edges, turn over and re-press. You can also stitch it to the background fabric first, remove basting and then cutting a small slit remove freezer paper.
