NINE PATCH BLOCK

The nine patch block is a very easy block to make. These directions are for machine piecing.
1. Cut six strips the width on your finished small square plus 1/2". For a two color nine patch, you will have three strips on a dark fabric, and three strips on a light fabric. If you are using a variety of fabrics, you will have 6 strips of different colors.

2. Make two long strips. For the first strip, sew either a light-dark-light or dark-light-dark strip. This will be for rows one and three. For row two sew the opposite colors together. Sew with 1/4" seam allowance. Press toward darker fabric.

3. Cut strips into units the same side as the original strip. For example if your strip was 2 1/2," each unit will be 2 1/2"

4. Each nine patch will consist of three rows. Place one row and row two right sides together. Sew with a 1/4" seam allowance. Press

5. Place row three (which has the same pattern as row one) on rows one and two right sides together. Sew with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Press

You have now successfully completed a nine patch block.
