PUPPY LOVE

Finished quilt is 46 by 57 inches

"Puppy Love" is a baby quilt with a dog theme. It has twelve squares with an applique dog in each square. It is an easy quilt to make, since it has only one pattern. I like to use a variety of materials in my quilts.

MATERIALS FOR "PUPPY LOVE" QUILT:

1 1/2 to 2 yards of doggie paw print or white fabric. The dogs will be appliqued on this fabric.

A variety of fabrics for the dogs. If you do not have fabric scraps, buy either fat quarters or 1/4 yard of each fabric you choose.

1/4 yard of fabric for cornerstones. (Use any fabric that will compliment your dog applique.)

3/4 to 1 yard fabric for sashing

1 1/2 yards fabric for inner border. I don't like to piece my borders so I buy enough material to cut my sashing strips in one piece. If you don't mind piecing your borders, you can be less fabric.

1 3/4 yards fabric for outer border and binding.

2 yards of backing fabric, if the fabric is at least 54 inches in width

4 yards of backing fabric, if the fabric is less than 54 inches. When I need to piece my fabric to make it wide enough, I have it cut in 2 pieces of 2 yards each.

2 yards of batting. Cotton batting is easier to quilt.

1 small piece of black felt

black embroidery floss

1 yard of interfacing

DIRECTIONS FOR "PUPPY LOVE" QUILT SQUARES:

1 Trace the following pattern pieces on the interfacing with pencil or permanent fabric maker. Place 3/4 inches apart. 12 dog bodies 12 dog legs(all three pieces) 12 dog faces 24 dog ears

2. Cut roughly apart

3. Pin the interfaced pieces to the fabrics of your choice. Pin them at least 12 inches apart.

4. Using a small running stitch, sew on the traces lines

5. Cut out leaving a 1/4 seam allowance.

6. Cut a small slit in the interfacing. Turn inside out. Press out edges and smooth with fingers. If the piece has an open side, you will not need to cut a slit. Set aside

7. Trace the collar and the tail directly on fabric. Cut out leaving a scant 1/4 allowance.

8. Trace the nose and eyes on black felt. Cut out on traced line.

9. Sew or glue(with fabric glue) the eyes and nose on the face. Use dog picture for placement.

10. With black embroidery floss stitch dogs mouth.

11. Sew ears to face, placing them 1/4" behind the face, using a small slant stitch

12. Sew the back leg to the dogs body

13. Sew the open side of leg 1 to leg 2, place it 1/4" behind

14. Sew legs 1&2 to dogs body

15. Sew the head to the body. Place the body about 1/4" behind the head. Leave area between head and body for the collar.

16. Using needle-turn applique, sew on collar

17. Cut out 12 squares 12" each

18. Fold the squares in fourths. Center the dog on the squares. Using small straight pins, pin in place.

19. Pin tail to square. Tuck bottom of tail underneath dog about 1/4 inch. Using needle turn applique stitch in place.

20. Stitch dog to 12" squares

21. Trim to 10 1/2"

22. Repeat process for all 12 squares.

SEWING PUPPY LOVE SQUARES TOGETHER:

1. Cut 31 pieces of sashing material, 10 1/2 by 2 inches

2. Cut 20 cornerstone pieces, 2 X 2 inches.

3. Sew a Cornerstone piece to the left side of a sashing piece. I like to do this on a sewing machine, using chain piecing. (Chain piecing is sewing one piece after the other with no break between pieces). Continue until you have sewn all the Cornerstone pieces. Cut apart 4. Sew two sashing pieces(with cornerstone)together with cornerstone on the left. Make 5 rows. Sew third piece to other two. When finished you should have 5 rows with 3 sashing strip and 4 cornerstones in each row.

5. Press seams toward the sashing fabric. Set aside

6. Lay your Puppy Love squares on a large surface, the floor works great. Pin a #1 on the first row, #2 on the second, and so forth. Stack all the #1's together, #2"s etc. Place them in row order starting with the first row.

7. Sew a sashing piece to the left side of all "a" squares(the first square in each row.) Then sew a sashing to each "b" square etc.

8. Sew a square "a" to a square "b" with sashing on the left. Then sew the "c" squares. Last sew a final sashing after the "c" square. You should have 4 rows with 3 squares in each row.

9. Press the seams toward the sashing.

10. Sew a sashing and cornerstone strip to the top of the "puppy love" dog rows. Butt seams together to get good points. Add a sashing row to the bottom of the last dog row. Press toward sashing.

11. Sew rows 1 & 2 together, 3 & 4 together. Press

12. Sew rows 1&2 to 3&4. Press

ADDING BORDERS TO PUPPY LOVE QUILT:

1. Measure the width of your quilt. For your inner border cut a strip this amount by 1 1/2 inches. Should be about 36 inches.

2. Sew to the top and bottom of your quilt using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Press

3. Measure the length of your quilt, including borders. Cut a strip this piece by 1 1/2 inches. It should be about 47 1/2 inches.

4. Sew to the sides on your quilt using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Press

5. Repeat process with outer border. The outer border is 4 1/2 inches in width.

LAYERING PUPPY LOVE QUILT:

1. If the fabric you choose for your backing is to narrow. Sew the two pieces together, using a 1/2 inch seam allowance, press open. If your backing material is wide enough, skip this step. Leave excess fabric around the quilt

2. Lay your fabric on a flat surface, right side down. Smooth out any wrinkles, pin or tape down to keep smooth

3. Lay your batting on top of backing, smooth out wrinkles. Leave extra batting around the quilt,

4. Lay your quilt top on top of batting, smooth out wrinkles. Starting in the center either pin or baste three layers together. I like using quilter safety pins. Pin them about a hands width apart. If you baste your quilt, use a contrasting thread for easy removal.

5. Your quilt is ready to be quilted.

BINDING "PUPPY LOVE" QUILT:

1.Trim your batting and backing evenly with your quilt top.

2.Measure the width of your quilt, add 1 inch

3.Cut 2 strips 2 inches by the width of your quilt. Repeat the the length. Fold the four strips in half and press.

4.Pin your binding to the top and bottom of your quilt top with right sides together and raw edges together. Machine quilt with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Repeat for remaining 2 sides.

5. Fold binding to the back of the quilt and stitch in place using a slanted hem stitch. Press binding flat.

6. Remove quilting pins or thread
