Rail Fence Block

The Rail Fence block, which is also known as the Fence Rail Block, is a very easy strip piece block. You can make many different quilts depending on the direction you place each block. This pattern can be made with any number of strips. The example I have included is made with six strips.

Directions:

1. Cut six fabrics in long strips that are 1 1/2 inches wide. These fabrics should range in color from light to dark.

2. Sew the six fabrics together, sequencing from light to dark using a 1/4" seam allowance. Press each row toward the darker fabric.

3. Cut the the sets apart every 6 1/2".

4. Take four of the sets and make a four-patch, see above picture for placement.

5. For a quilt you will continue to sew the four-patch Rail Fence together to make strips the desired width. Then you will sew the strips together to make the desired length.
