Sailboat Block

The Sailboat block is an easy block that is made up of squares, half square triangles and rectangles. It can be made in any colors. I did the sails all in the same two colors, white and blue, but the block also looks great with multicolor sails.

The fabrics I used for this block are white for the background, blue print for the sails, yellow for the boat bottom and blue for the water.

Directions for making the Sailboat Block

A. Cutting the pieces

1. Background: one 2 1/2 by 4 1/2 inch piece
one 2 1/2 by 8 1/2 inch piece
one 4 1/2 by 8 1/1 inch piece
five 2 7/8 inch squares
two 2 1/2 inch squares

2. Sails: five 2 7/8 inch squares
one 2 1/2 inch square

3. Boat bottom: one 2 1/2 by 12 1/2 inch piece

4. Water: one 2 1/2 by 12 1/2 inch piece.

B. Sewing the Block

1. Make 10 half square triangles

a. Draw a diagonal line on the back of each 2 7/8 inch square

b. Sew 1/4 inch on both sides of the line. If you are using a sewing machine you don't need to draw a sewing line, but if you are hand piecing you might want to draw lines for accuracy in sewing.

C. Open units and press toward the darker fabric.

3. Pin rows 1 & 2 right sides together, making sure the seams are locked together. Sew with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Repeat with row three. Press. Make sure the sail fabric is on the right in all the blocks.

4. Sew the last half square triangle to the 2 1/2 by 4 1/2 inch background piece. Press toward background fabric.

5. Sew this piece to the other rows of sails. Press

6. Draw a diagonal line on the 2 1/2 inch square of the sail fabric. Place it right sides together at the right bottom of the 4 1/2 by 8 1/2 inch background fabric. Sew on the diagonal line. Press the square back toward the right edge. It will make a triangle.

7. With right sides together sew the 2 1/2 by 8 1/2 background piece to the right side of the sail unit. Press

8. With right sides together, sew 4 1/2 by 8 1/2 background piece to the left side of the sail unit.

9. Draw a diagonal line on your two 2 1/2 inch background squares. Pin them, right sides together to the edges of the boat bottom fabric. The line should go from the outer edge toward the center on both pieces. See picture below for placement. Sew on the diagonal line. Press the square back to make a triangle.
