Quilting Supplies

Before you start your first quilt there are a few basic quilting supplies you need. These supplies will make your job easier and more accurate.

1. Rotary cutter

A rotary cutter is needed for almost all quilts. With a rotary cutter you are able to cut through several layers of fabric at once. Rotary cutters come in various sizes. The largest is the most useful. A rotary cutter is extremely sharp, so be very careful when using it. Make sure you close it after every use.

2. Rotary cutting mat

If you use a rotary cutter, you also need a rotary cutting mat. The mats come in different sizes. You want your mat to be at least 18 inches by 24 inches.

These mats will not dull your blades and they are "self-healing", which means they will not get cuts, nicks, or grooves on the surface that could affect your cutting. They have grid lines that help you align your fabric for a straighter cut.

3. Rotary rulers

There are many sizes of rulers. The two I use the most are the 6 inches by 18 inches and the 12 1/2 inch square. The first ruler you should buy is the 6 inch by 18 inch. These rulers are made out of acrylic, so the rotary cutter will not harm them

4. Other quilting supplies

You will also need fabric scissors, paper scissors(for applique pattern), needles(betweens and/or applique), a pencil or permanent fabric pen (for tracing pattern onto fabric), thread, and of course the fabric. Cotton fabric works best for quilting.

You now have the basic supplies you need. There might be other small items you will need in the future. I will cover these as they are needed

Now that you have bought your quilting supplies, return to "Start Your First Quilt".
